Red Smith Scholarships Awarded to Area High School Student-Athletes

The 55th annual Red Smith Sports Awards honored 6 local high school students for their athletic achievements on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at 6:00 pm at the Red Lion Hotel Paper Valley in downtown Appleton. Each student received a $1,500 scholarship. All proceeds from the Red Smith Sports Awards help support youth sports organizations throughout the Fox Valley.

Spencer Meyer of Appleton East High School, Cady Isom of Appleton North High School, and Kaden Krueger of Appleton West High School received a scholarship funded by the generosity of the J.J. Keller Foundation, Inc. Andrew Behm of Fox Valley Lutheran High School and Anna Higgins of Xavier High each received scholarships generously funded by of SECURA Insurance. Both the SECURA Insurance Scholarship winners and the J. J. Keller Foundation, Inc. Scholarship winners are selected based upon athletic excellence, academic success and community service. Paige Nyiri, of Xavier High School, was awarded the Danny Ornstein Memorial Scholarship. The Danny Ornstein Scholarship is funded by the Friends of Danny Ornstein and honors students who have contributed to athletics in a supporting role. The Red Smith Sports Awards Committee is thrilled to recognize these talented individuals. The dedication of each of these student-athletes is commendable and enjoyed honoring them at this year’s event.

The Red Smith Sports Awards featured legendary sportscaster Bob Costas, Major League Baseball’s most experienced postseason umpire Gerry Davis, and Basketball Hall of Famer Sidney Moncrief.
