DOUG MELVIN TO ATTEND BANQUET, TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE
Milwaukee Brewer’s General Manager and 2009 “Nice Guy” Award winner, Doug Melvin, will attend the 46th Annual Red Smith Sports Award Banquet, according to banquet chairman, Mike Reese. Melvin will represent the Brewers at the head table during the banquet on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in downtown Appleton, Wisconsin, beginning at 6:30 pm.

Melvin is in the middle of an offseason, where he drastically improved the pitching staff by trading for 2009 Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke and Toronto Blue Jay ace, Shaun Marcum. He has positioned the Brewers as favorites in the National League Central Division.

Joining Melvin at the head table will be the 1999 Heisman Trophy Winner and Wisconsin Badger Football legend, Ron Dayne, this year’s winner of the Red Smith Award winner. Dayne will be introduced by the “Voice of Badger basketball and football” Matt Lepay, who in a first for the banquet, will be apart of an interactive presentation between himself and Dayne.

The Milwaukee Brewers all time career hit leader, Jeff Cirillo, will be the recipient of the “Nice Guy” Award. Three time Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Year, Dennis Krause, will introduce and present Cirillo with the crystal cup.

Veteran sports broadcaster, Greg Gumbel, will be the banquets main speaker. Currently, he is teamed up with Dan Dierdorf, as the play-by-play announcer, for CBS’s coverage of the NFL. Gumbel is also CBS’s studio host for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament and The Final Four.

Representatives from the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and their new Manager, Matt Erickson, University of Wisconsin, UWGB, Green Bay Gamblers and the Badger State Games will be attending and speaking at the banquet.
