Scholarship Winners: 1966-1985

Scholarships for high school seniors were not awarded during the first seven banquets.  Then, in 1973, the Appletion State Bank offered to sponsor a scholarship for a deserving local student athlete.  In 1974, the Appleton Professional Policeman’s Association matched the offer with a second award that year and the tradition of honoring the finest student athletes at Appleton area high schools was underway.

In the second decade of the banquet, a new scholarship sponsor was added when Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) offered to dedicate scholarships in the memory of banquet founders George Klose and Casey Roemer.  Appleton State Bank became Valley Bank in 1975 and they continued their committment to the Red Smith scholoarships under their new name.  AAL and Valley Bank would alternate between the public and private schools each year with their awards. The scholarship amount was raised from $300 to $350 during these years!
